Dance to the Music

Music is a very powerful mood-setter.



You probably already know about putting on romantic music for a special date. Maybe you go to a gym that plays fast-paced music for an aerobics or spin class to inspire you to move faster. What you may not realize is that music can also be used to cheer you up when you are feeling down.


There is a trick to picking cheery music, though. It has to have a catchy tune; one that makes you feel like tapping your feet – or, better yet – getting up and dancing!


If it is a song, it should be one that you like to sing along with. Be careful of the message, though. Remember that the idea is to cheer you up; not make you sad or angry.


Some of my favorite music for this purpose is fast-paced bluegrass or old rock ‘n roll, like Buddy Holly or early Elvis. There is plenty of contemporary music that fits the bill too. I’m just not as familiar with that (I am embarrassed to admit!).


The important thing is to pick music that literally brings a smile to your face and makes you want to sing or hum along and tap your foot. Then, as you are listening to it and feeling those feelings, give into them! Sing or hum out loud! Get up and dance! And, keep at it for at least five minutes - ideally for 10 to 15 minutes; until you are slightly out of breath. You will be amazed at how much better you feel!


Savor those good feelings. Continue to hum along even after the music has stopped. Repeat as often as needed, to brighten your day and your outlook on life.
