Lighten Up

Updated: Sep 4, 2023

Don’t take things so seriously. Quit worrying. Everything will turn out okay. This is one of those pieces of advice that is always easier to give than to take. How do you know everything is going to turn out okay?!

Well, the truth is, you don’t. And, it is just as true that worrying doesn’t help. Now, if there is some way you can turn your worry into meaningful action, that can help. Otherwise, you are just wasting your time and your adrenaline.

Sometimes we are not so much worried as afraid that we need to act worried so people will know that we care. The truth is, there are more helpful ways to show that you care. Besides, a little lightheartedness can often help others deal with scary situations.

Being too serious isn’t always incident-based. Sometimes, it can be a way of life. For instance:

  • Some people think it's so important to have well-behaved children that they punish their kids for even minor offenses.

  • Some people are so worried about being respected that they can’t take a joke about themselves.

  • Some people are so worried about being seen as a failure that they are horrified by even their honest mistakes.

  • Some people are so worried about running out of money that they can’t enjoy what money they have available.

  • Some people are so worried about being hurt that they can’t open up.

  • Some people are so worried about dying that they never really live.

If you find yourself being too serious (and we all do it from time to time), then remember these two things:

  • Worrying doesn’t help.

  • Being serious doesn’t help.

Learn to lighten up – especially in the face of adversity. That will not only help you to happily thrive, it will also brighten the lives of those around you.
