Over-Achieving or Just Over-Doing?

Some of us pride ourselves on our busy lives, as though it is an indication of our importance.

Some of us (like me) have so many things we want to do that we just end up busy.

Some of us feel like we have no choice but to be busy in order to survive. Whatever your reason for being busy, it is worth stopping every once in a while to take a look at all of your activity to see if it is really productive. Most of it probably is. However, there may be some activities that aren't yielding the results you'd hoped for. There could be several reasons for this:

  • It isn't a good fit for you after all. This could be the case with volunteer activities, hobbies, social events, etc. It may have sounded like a good idea at one point but hasn't worked out as you'd expected.

  • It is a good (or necessary) fit for you, but you're not making any forward progress. This might be an indication that you need to take a different tack or somehow improve your efficiency.

  • It is a habit or part of your routine that may not serve you or anyone else any more (e.g. ironing non-iron items, dinner with the family every Sunday, washing your car every week, etc.)

Whether you find a way to cut back or not, it never hurts to take a look now and then. It is one thing to over-achieve; it is quite another to just over-do.
